February 2018 Fly Tying and Regular Meeting

The fly tying and regular meeting of the Red River Fly Fishers was held February 6th with fly tying starting at 6:00 PM and was a fun and educational time for all tiers of all levels.

The regular meeting got kicked off at 7:00 by President Reid Winger with a little bit of club business followed by a presentation by Dutch Baughman on Fly Fishers International (FFI).

Dutch provided a very informative presentation on not only FFI but also his experience fishing for steelhead and being a “steelheader”.

Dutch talked in depth about the dawning of a new era for FFI that continues its historic work on conservation and education.

The growth of the education side of FFI has resulted in the creation of the FFI Learning Center on the FFI website that is focused on teaching fly fishing skills for both the new and experienced fly angler. The learning center will be the “on-line destination where educational materials of the highest quality…”.

The FFI website and learning center can be found at www.flyfishersinternational.org

The library of information on the FFI Learning Center is available free of charge to any fly angler whether they are FFI members or not.

In addition members of FFI can access additional resources that can be used for furthering fly fishing education.

Information was also given on the Texas Council and the 21 fly fishing clubs located in Texas. The Texas Council is focused on helping fly fishing clubs within the state of Texas be all they can be and educate current fly anglers as well as attract new individuals to the sport of fly fishing.

Regardless if you are an experienced fly angler or just thinking about giving fly fishing a try check out the FFI website and consider joining FFI. Also if you are in the North Texas area joint the Red River Fly Fishers at our next meeting on March 6th. See the events page for more details.
